Boilermakers

Construct, assemble, maintain, and repair stationary steam boilers and boiler house auxiliaries. Align structures or plate sections to assemble boiler frame tanks or vats, following blueprints. Work involves use of hand and power tools, plumb bobs, levels, wedges, dogs, or turnbuckles. Assist in testing assembled vessels. Direct cleaning of boilers and boiler furnaces. Inspect and repair boiler fittings, such as safety valves, regulators, automatic-control mechanisms, water columns, and auxiliary machines.

Physical Robots

Physical robotics, autonomous machines, and automated equipment are the main threat to the physical tasks in this occupation.

Boilermakers fabricate, install, and maintain large pressure vessels, boilers, and industrial systems — a physically demanding trade requiring certified welding skills, blueprint reading, and confined-space work that is essentially impossible to automate with current robotics. AI assists with inspection scheduling and weld quality analysis (Baker Hughes's UT AI inspection tools), but the fabrication and installation work is highly human-dependent. Through 2027, infrastructure maintenance demand and energy facility construction keep boilermaker employment stable, with no meaningful AI displacement.
