Physical Robots

Physical robotics, autonomous machines, and automated equipment are the main threat to the physical tasks in this occupation.

Sailors and marine oilers serve on commercial vessels, performing deck work, navigation watch duties, and engine room maintenance — physically demanding maritime work where autonomous vessel technology (Rolls-Royce Marine's autonomous ship platform, Kongsberg's Yara Birkeland) is being developed but faces extensive regulatory and practical barriers to widespread commercial deployment. The STCW certification requirements and vessel complexity keep human crew essential through 2027, with AI bridge and engine room monitoring assisting rather than replacing crew.
