Hybrid Threat

Both AI software and physical automation threaten different aspects of this role, creating a compound risk from multiple directions.

Air Crew Members operate aircraft systems, manage sensor payloads, and execute mission tasks requiring real-time human judgment in military aviation environments. AI is deeply integrated into modern military aircraft (AI targeting, AESA radar AI, autonomous wingman programs like Loyal Wingman/CCA), and the Air Force is actively developing optionally crewed aircraft. Through 2027, the air crew role evolves significantly as AI handles more flight and sensor management tasks, but human decision authority over weapons release and mission command is maintained by doctrine and law.
